Neve 88R Scoring Panel 2

The first week of 2006 saw AIR's technical department and the boys from Neve remove the entire centre section of our 88R. The original 6 track monitor and scoring panel has been ditched for a brand new SP2 (Scoring Panel 2). This was no mean feat as it also necessitated a complete re-work of the cabling and patchbay, Neve themselves estimated 2 weeks work! We started on Tuesday and finished 5 days later, leaving Sunday to comprehensively test and line-up the beast before the first session on Monday.

It is fair to say the SP2 has transformed the already excellent 88R. Whilst providing an astounding array of new features and flexibility, it is easier to drive and more intuitive than the previous panel. This allows engineers to feel at home and get on with their work straight away, then explore the new features at their leisure.

The entire panel has been built around the concept of shortest signal path for absolute audio clarity. The centre piece is a silky smooth 9-gang passive volume control. The mix can be balanced against Dialogue and Effects on dedicated faders. All the usual external monitoring is present but of course it is all now 8-wide. Comprehensive speaker control allows custom reductions and fold-downs to be monitored. All these features have dedicated buttons, no digging in layers or menus.

The stem formatter and controller makes the monitoring of multiple stems, across 48 x 3 inputs, simple. Bus and tape sources are switchable, summable, adjustable and toggle-able. Four 2-track mixers take the same 48 x 3 inputs and generate completely configurable fold-downs. This alone frees up whole sections of the console previously sacrificed to this role.

Our engineers love it,

"... feel like this truly completes the console ..."

"... brilliant ..."

Comments like these confirm that the SP2 is an essential component for score recording and mixing on the 88R and of course AIR continues to provide the very best in the world.
